About PredictIt
PredictIt is a real-money political prediction market operated as an academic research project by Victoria University of Wellington under a CFTC no-action letter. Markets are capped at 5,000 traders and $850 per contract.
PredictIt at a glance
How PredictIt works (under the hood)
PredictIt is operated by Victoria University of Wellington under a 2014 CFTC no-action letter that permits a small-scale academic prediction market focused on political research. The CFTC withdrew that letter in 2022, but ongoing litigation has kept PredictIt operating.
Position limits ($850 per contract, 5,000 traders per market) keep the market small enough to qualify as academic research. Liquidity is therefore much thinner than Polymarket or Kalshi, but PredictIt has the longest continuous political prediction-market history in the US.
Tech stack
- Operator
- Victoria University of Wellington
- Funding
- USD via debit card
- Fees
- 5% withdrawal + 10% on profits
- API
- Read-only public market data feed (no CORS)
Fees
PredictIt charges 10% on profits when a market closes plus 5% on withdrawals — the highest fee load of any major prediction market. These fees fund the academic research operation.
Liquidity & activity
Daily volume is concentrated on flagship presidential and congressional contracts. Position limits mean a single market can have at most 5,000 active traders; book depth is correspondingly capped.
Notable incidents
- Election nights — PredictIt has historically slowed under election-night traffic; the platform stays up but experiences degraded UX.
- 2022–2024 — Multiple legal proceedings around the no-action letter; service continued throughout.
How it differs from other platforms
PredictIt is most useful as a historical data source and small-stakes political market. For meaningful capital allocation, Kalshi has overtaken it on liquidity and Polymarket on selection.

Data & methodology
Checks run from your browser every ~45 seconds. Latency reflects your network path to the endpoint, not the server alone. Historical uptime is logged hourly via an independent worker (rolling 30-day window). PredictIt does not send permissive CORS headers — browser checks confirm DNS / TCP / TLS only.
- Public market data feed— Read-only, no auth.
- Site root— Front-end reachability.

About this site
All data is provided on a best-effort basis with no guarantees about accuracy or availability. This is an unofficial status page and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by PredictIt.
Checks run client-side from your browser against PredictIt's public APIs. Latency therefore reflects your network path to the endpoint — not the server's health alone — and is subject to local clock skew, ISP routing, and browser scheduling.
If this page is showing "All Systems Operational" and you still believe PredictIt is degraded, the issue may be on an internal subsystem we cannot probe publicly (matching engine, custodial wallet, KYC, deposits). Cross-check the official PredictIt status page and their social channels before assuming a full outage.
