About Polymarket
Polymarket is the largest crypto-based prediction market, settling event contracts in USDC on Polygon. The CLOB API handles order placement and matching; Gamma serves market metadata and discovery. Outages on either typically translate to degraded trading or stale market data on the front-end.
Polymarket at a glance
How Polymarket works (under the hood)
Polymarket launched in 2020 and grew into the world's largest prediction market during the 2024 US presidential cycle, processing more than $3.7 billion in election-related volume. After settling with the CFTC in January 2022 for operating an unregistered binary-options market, it geoblocked US IP addresses and now serves international users only.
The matching layer is a hybrid: a centralized off-chain order book signs trades that settle on Polygon. The result is the latency of a centralized exchange with the non-custodial guarantees of DeFi — your USDC never leaves your wallet without a signature.

Fees
Polymarket charges 0% trading fees on both maker and taker sides. The platform earns from spread and from a small spread between Moonpay USDC purchase and on-chain USDC. Gas is paid in MATIC and is typically less than $0.01 per trade thanks to Polygon's cheap fees.
Liquidity & activity
Top political markets routinely hold $5M–$30M in open interest; the largest 2024 election market peaked above $500M. Outside elections, sports and crypto-price markets dominate. Order books are dense on the top 50 markets and thin on long-tail novelty markets.
Notable incidents
- Nov 2024 — Election night latency: order book delays and slow front-end loads at peak traffic; no funds at risk.
- Mar 2025 — Upstream Polygon RPC degradation caused front-end stalls; resolved by failover to a secondary provider.
- Feb 2025 — UMA dispute on a high-profile geopolitics market raised resolution-risk concerns; outcome ultimately stood.
How it differs from other platforms
Polymarket has more markets and more long-tail variety than Kalshi, but is not legally available to US users. Versus Manifold, it's real money (USDC) at multiples of the liquidity. Versus Limitless, it uses an order book rather than an AMM.
What to watch during a live event
On US election nights and major geopolitical resolutions, Polymarket's Gamma API is the first thing to slow down — the mobile app depends on it for market metadata, so a slow Gamma usually means a slow app before the order book itself is affected.
Watch the CLOB heartbeat latency line: if it climbs above ~500ms and stays there, matching is being throttled. Cross-check status.polymarket.com and Polygon's own status feed before assuming an outage; roughly a third of "Polymarket is down" reports we've traced back have been upstream Polygon RPC issues.
UMA resolution disputes are a separate risk that this page cannot probe. A market can trade, settle, and still have its resolution challenged for up to 48 hours after the event.

Data & methodology
Checks run from your browser every ~45 seconds. Latency reflects your network path to the endpoint, not the server alone. Historical uptime is logged hourly via an independent worker (rolling 30-day window).
- CLOB Markets API— Order book + matching engine.
- CLOB Server Time— Heartbeat / clock sync.
- Gamma Markets API— Market discovery + metadata.
- Official status page— Polymarket's own incident feed (embedded above).

About this Polymarket status mirror
Our Polymarket mirror probes the public CLOB endpoint (clob.polymarket.com/time) for clock and matching-engine health and the Gamma markets endpoint (gamma-api.polymarket.com) for market-discovery health. "Operational" here means both APIs reply with a healthy 2xx and a fresh timestamp — it does not guarantee that every individual market is resolvable or that the UMA oracle is idle.
Because Polymarket runs on Polygon, a Polygon RPC or sequencer degradation can leave the APIs green while trades still fail on-chain. When you see amber or red here on election nights, it is almost always the Gamma front-end API buckling under load rather than the CLOB order book itself.
